I had the pleasure of being invited to a Doors tribute concert at the infamous Whisky bar on Sunset by my pal and props guy this past weekend. He's known me for years and is well versed on my minor Jim Morrison obsession and has be trying to get me to this show for a long time but a cover band just didn't seem like something I'd enjoy.
To cover is to mimic whilst infusing your own flavor and to be honest, I wasn't about to see some of my favorite poems and rythms butchered by a bunch of musicians who failed to ever create their own sound. Boy, was I ignorant! This was certainly not a "cover "band, but a tribute to one of music's great lyrical legends, he sounded almost exactly like him!
Every ounce of Jim's essence was in the air that night and I had my eyes closed, breathing deep. If you get a chance to check out Wild Child, the phenomenal band I saw last weekend, please make a point of doing so as soon as you can, don't wait years like I did! In fact, I'll be going back soon myself so maybe I'll see ya there... ;)
